self-paced, online workshop for caretakers & partners

Supporting
At-Home SCI Rehab

Best practices for caretakers & partners assisting with at-home therapy exercises

As a caretaker assisting with at-home therapy exercises,
you are extending your body to help theirs.

This partnership is about communication, collaboration, and respect for each other’s health & safety.

Learn how to support [your person] while keeping your body safe and the partnership alive.

As an SCI athlete working to get beneficial movement at home, you may have to ask your partner, family member, caretaker, or friend (“partner”) to assist with your exercises.

This can be frustrating and awkward and might break boundaries you previously set for those relationships. Turning your assisted at-home rehab into a collaborative, positive, and safe experience for both of you is essential for any sustainable rehab effort.

As an SCI athlete and trainer duo, the Zebrafish team will discuss the process of discovering new ways of moving together: where and when to help, how to effectively communicate requirements for support, and proper body positioning to stay safe during transfers, turning/rolling over and exercise execution.

“During the pandemic, we were forced to do Conner’s therapy totally alone.

Where we initially saw this as an inconvenience, we realized all the possibilities that a home routine can provide. Stephanie’s instruction helped us gain confidence and skills to help Conner further his recovery at home while still preserving our relationship.”

Jane Morgan, partner & primary caretaker of C5 incomplete SCI

  • Understand the value of parter-assisted rehab and how it fits in with the big picture of SCI recovery
